In 1970 Washington State had less than a half dozen wineries in the Northwest region. By the end of the decade , Washington had grown to about a dozen wineries and around 3000 acres of vineyard. In 1980 Washington State had shown that it could make competitive wines. Perhaps the most important development of the decade , even more important than the wine industry's growth.
